Water, the most important element for human life. You can’t live without it yet so many of us take it for granted.

Having water on tap in our homes is a great luxury that some countries don’t have but drinking it this way can impact your health.

If you’ve never researched the contents of our water supply I’ll tell you it can be quite shocking, through its research the Environmental Working Group has discovered there are over 300 pollutants in Americans drinking water (source). Of these 300 over half are unregulated and can be present in any amount, this really can be detrimental to your health.

Some different types of pollutants in water are as follows

And the Best Water Filter is....

Apec ROES-50 Reverse Osmosis Water Filter

    • Number 1 Best Seller
    • Made Here in the USA
    • Long Lasting Filter
    • Removes 99% of Contaminants

· Heavy Metals there is a huge range of toxic heavy metals in water including lead, arsenic and mercury, they are known to be toxic to us, they build up inside our bodies and the body has a hard job getting rid of them making us sicker over time

· Pharmaceuticals the amount of different pharmaceuticals we take has increased exponentially over the last decade, we then pass them into the water supply through our waste, current water treatment practices doesn’t effectively remove them

· Chemicals lots of chemicals are present in water, some are added to drinking water for different purposes like disinfection of the water, and chlorine is one chemical that is used by all water utilities. It is still present when water leaves your faucet. Pesticides are another chemical that is hard to filter, run off from agriculture lets them make their way into the water supply

· Microbes this includes bacteria, viruses and parasites, obviously consuming these can make you sick. These contaminants can make their way into drinking after it has been treated so having your own filter is the only sure way to ensure they aren’t in your drinking water

· Fluoride probably the most controversial addition to drinking water, its reported to strengthen teeth and bones but you have no choice about it, it is just forced upon you whether you like it or not, lots of studies and evidence is coming out that fluoride does more harm than good to your health and current levels are way too high to be safe (source)

Take for example Arlington, TX – from over 20 million tests by the water utilities it is deemed to have the best quality of water yet it still had 7 regulated chemicals that exceeded heath guidelines!

Hi I'm Michael Johnson welcome to my site.

I created this website to pass on my knowledge from the research I have done into water quality and the best filters to produce a healthy source of drinking water.

My profile picture m johnson

I love being healthy and clean water is a big deal to me. I believe everyone shouldn't be drinking water that's full of contaminants, I hope you find my site useful. Thanks for stopping by!

Where do These Pollutants Come From?

Agricultural pollutants 22%
Industrial pollutants 48%
Urban pollutants 20%
Water treatment pollutants 10%

Now I’m not completely bashing our system of water supply, our country wouldn’t be as great as it is without the water infrastructure that has been built, but it needs improvement and until then I’ll keep filtering my water before I drink it.

I always try to make the best choices for my health so making sure I drink lots of water is a big one, try googling ‘Health Tips’ and I guarantee almost everyone will recommend drinking more water, but little did I know the more tap water I drank the more toxins and poisonous chemicals I was ingesting.

After a bit of research I found reputable sources that had tested water supplies all over America and came to the same conclusions that our water isn’t as safe as we’d like or really as it should be.

I’d read enough I couldn’t continue drinking water straight from the faucet, I began to really notice the chemically, slightly metallic taste of my water, I had to find a better source of water.

I turned to bottled water but soon realized it wasn’t a good option at all, first the cost was extremely high when compared to tap water, and the plastic waste that followed couldn’t be good for the environment.

More research showed the chemicals that leak from the plastic into the water, like BPA, are also bad for your health and some bottled water actually came from tap water!

The Solution

My journey to a cost effective, sustainable source of healthy, clean, pollutant free water lead me to begin researching water filters.

I’ve spent countless hours and plenty of dollars researching and testing the best water filters around, giving me a wealth of knowledge on the best filters money can buy

A reverse osmosis (RO) system is highly efficient at removing many types of particles and contaminants from water, whether dissolved or not.

It uses a semipermeable membrane that allows water to pass through it but the holes are smaller than most particles found in water so they get trapped and flushed away from your drinking water. (source)

It was first used in water purification to filter sea water into a drinkable solution by removing the salt content.

As technology has improved over time the systems have added more filtration process to the mix making the whole system perform better and last longer.

The best is a 5 stage filtration process system that removes contaminants as follows

There are now different types of RO systems available with different stages of filtration

· Stage 1 is a sediment removal filter, these particles, sand, silt etc. could damage the membrane over time so are removed at an early stage

· Stage 2 is a dense carbon block that can remove unwanted chemicals from water like chlorine as well as bad tastes and odors

· Stage 3 is similar to stage 2 where repeating the process ensures nothing is left behind

· Stage 4 is the reverse osmosis semipermeable membrane that removes a wide variety of contaminates like viruses, fluoride, heavy metals and many more

· Stage 5 is a coconut shell refining carbon filter that finishes the purification process by removing any taste left from the process

Pros

  • Most superior process for removing contaminants
  • Pure water on demand straight from the faucet
  • Low maintenance
  • Produces great tasting water

Cons

  • Wastes quite a lot of water
  • Removes beneficial minerals (unless you purchase the component to add them back in

Verdict

Reverse osmosis systems are truly fantastic at removing all the crap we don’t want in our water, they are the best water filters for producing the purest water.

If you want a filter that gives you peace of mind knowing all the contaminants that damage your health are removed from your drinking water then a Reverse Osmosis filtration system is for you, they are installed under your sink and don’t take up too much room, the installation process is fairly simple so most people can do it themselves

One important note, if you use this system you will need to remineralize your water so it is more beneficial to your health

View Whole House Filters on Amazon

Most people are aware of the contaminants in their water supply and some realize the way it can impact their health, they buy a filter that goes under the sink so they don’t have to drink them, while this is a great step in the right direction they are missing a huge area of their home where their bodies intake water

The shower

While taking a hot shower lots of water and its contained contaminants, chlorine for example, are turned into steam, this steam is breathed in during your shower so not only are you bathing in the water and absorbing it through your skin but you are taking it directly into your lungs. Not good!

The solution, a whole house water filter.

These water filters are a great way of removing the unwanted chemicals and pollutants from the water you wash in and drink.

These work best when combined with a reverse osmosis system (see above). The whole house system covers you when you bathe and shower, then the RO system ensures your drinking water is pure.

These filters generally work in 2 stages, the first is a multi-gradient polypropylene sediment filter starting with a 25 micron outer layer dropping to a 10 micron then 5 micron inner layer and finally a 1 micron inner core.

The different micron thicknesses remove most organic and inorganic matter.

The second stage uses a catalytic carbon filter that purifies your water by removing chlorine and other chemical contaminants.

Pros

  • Every faucet and water outlet in your house produces pure water
  • Once installed it requires no maintenance (apart from filter changes)
  • Filters last a long time
  • Little effect on water pressure

Cons

  • May need to be installed by a plumber
  • Hard to tell when filters need replacing

Verdict

If you want clean purified water delivered to every faucet, bath and shower with peace of mind you are looking out for you and your family’s health then a whole house water filter is a great option

They generally last around a year for a family of 4 before the filters need to be changed and don’t affect the water pressure in your home

The cleanest looking water is not necessarily the healthiest. The treated water supplied to your home may still contain some impurities and it may also taste bad due to the chemicals used during the treatment process.

Using a countertop water filtration system will remove a lot of the impurities and chemicals.

Countertop water filters are simple but effective devices that provide high quality drinking water by removing chlorine and other chemicals from city tap water.

A simple replaceable carbon cartridge used in the countertop unit reduces various contaminants such as lead and other heavy metals, cysts, nitrates and even bacteria.

The countertop water filter’s diverter valve replaces the water faucets aerator. You just screw off the aerator and screw on the filter’s diverter valve, and the filter is ready for use. When you turn on the faucet, water from the sink faucet is diverted through the small tube to the water filter housing. Inside the housing is a replaceable filter cartridge. Water passes through this filter cartridge and leaves through the spout. To turn off the filter, just turn off the cold water faucet. The diverter valve pops back into place and restores your sink faucet to its normal operation.

Pros

  • Good at removing impurities
  • Easy to install and fit most faucets
  • Fast flow rate
  • Better performance when compared to pitcher water filters

Cons

  • You have to have the unit on show
  • You don't have the option to chill the water before pouring

Verdict

People living in rural areas, where no water treatment is available, and where water is obtained from wells or other sources can benefit by using countertop water filters. These filters help eliminate impurities like harmful bacteria, viruses and various other contaminants. People who want filtered water not just for drinking but also cooking, and for larger families, they need a more powerful purification system that can be readily available on their kitchen counters. Remember that your kids need healthy water just as much, or even more than you.

Faucet Water Filters

These types of filters are very cheap so no matter your budget you can definitely afford one of these filters, look to spend between $20-$30

For their ease and simplicity these filters are pretty good, they don't perform as well as the bigger filters but they do a good job for the price

remove aerator from the end of your faucet and screw it on. You can't get much simpler then that!

I would like the filters to last a bit longer but due to their small size you can't expect too much. I found they lasted between 3-6 months

View Faucet Water Filters on Amazon

If you want your faucet to produce clean refreshing water every time you use it but you don’t want the high expense or tougher installation of under sink or whole house filters then a simple effective faucet water filter might be your best option.

The best models are super simple to install and have indicators to let you know when the filters need replacing, they are effective at removing a good range of contaminants up to 99% removal

Installation just requires you to remove the aerator from your faucet and simply screw or push on the unit to the threaded end of your faucet, being so quick and easy to install you can simply switch between filtered and unfiltered water so you won’t waste the filters for water that’s used to wash your floors.

The filters typically last around 3 months before they need replacing which is really good considering their smaller size when compared to under sink filters.

They work by using your water pressure to push the water through a carbon filter that traps and reduces contaminants in your water

Pros

  • Removes 10 times more contaminants than pitcher water filters
  • Very easy to install
  • Easy to replace filter
  • Filters are cheap

Cons

  • Doesn't fit all faucet types
  • Slows water flow

Verdict

If you are just looking to reduce the contaminants in your water supply for a healthier better tasting drink then a faucet water filter can be a great option, the ease of installation is a great selling point for this type of filter, I don’t think anyone would struggle fitting it to their faucet, unless you don’t have a standard size then you may need an adapter which doesn’t complicate the installation process much.

Another good reason to choose a faucet water filter is if you don’t have much space under your sink for a larger under sink filtration system.

Under Sink Water Filters

COST

Performance

Installation

Filter Life

Under sink filters have a wide variance in price, based on filter quality. They are priced between $60-$200, the best do cost more here

The multi stage filters perform really well at removing contaminants, the single stage filters still do a good job though

Depending on the room under your sink and existing fittings these filters can be tricky to install, you may need to call a plumber

Filter life is around 6 months so for their cost it is economical when compared to bottled water the cost would be around $0.36 a day

View Under Sink Filters on Amazon

As the name suggests these filters are installed under your sink and filter the water coming from your faucet, cold water travels through your pipes and into the filter before exiting your faucet.

Having one of these installed under your sink ensures you get clean purified water every time you turn on your taps

Just like their name suggests, under sink water filters are installed under the sink and when installed appropriately they will remove a wide range of impurities from your drinking water, including herbicides and parasites. They also reduce fluoride, heavy metals and organic chemicals, therefore improving not only the flavor or taste of your water, but its color and odor as well.

Under sink water filters use a technology known as carbon filtration to purify water. Carbon filtration is a very fast and efficient water purification technology that produces around 30 gallons of filtered water per hour.

An under sink water purifier would therefore be a good choice for households that require a bigger output of drinking water.

Other types of water purification technologies are not as efficient and as productive as the carbon filtration procedure.

The installation of this kind of water filter can be a bit complicated and may require the intervention of a plumber.

Just like all types of water filters, under sink water filters also have their own pros and cons. (outlined below)

Pros

  • Installed out of sight keeping your kitchen clutter free
  • Large daily output producing lots of filtered water
  • When compared to counter top, under sink filters are more durable

Cons

  • Harder to install but most plumbers charge very little to install them
  • More expensive filters but they do last longer

Verdict

All in all, under sink water filters remove a good amount of impurities from your drinking water, E.coli, cysts, sediments, and other harmful substances, this makes it much safer to drink.

Installing such a filter therefore comes with a lot of benefits, the peace of mind that comes with being confident the water your family is consuming is as safe as can be

In addition to that, these filters do not create an unsightly mess on your faucet or countertop seeing that they get installed under the sink out of view.

As an added bonus you will notice your dishes become clean faster and that there will no longer be a buildup of soap scum every time you clean them.

Therefore, all households, especially where children and pregnant women live, will hugely benefit from under sink water filters.

Whether you are using the city water system or you are off-the-grid, you might consider using a water filter to ensure your water is safe to drink. If you have a well or other access to water, you can use a simple gravity filter to purify your water.

Every household would benefit from a gravity water filter, they are so simple to setup and use, but surprisingly remove lots of toxic elements and heavy metals from your water.

The best have been classified as water purifiers as they remove contaminants above the purification standard

Gravity water filter systems are very effective systems that usually use 2 or more carbon filters.

A good quality system can filter out virtually everything from pathogenic bacteria to cysts, sediments, pesticides, herbicides, organic solvents, lead, mercury, copper, and chlorine.

Gravity water filters achieve extraordinary filtration due to the high amount of contact time the water has with the filter media.

Their efficiency and the fact that they do not require any power to work make them perfect to be used in an emergency. Moreover, they can be assembled without any special tools.

As the name suggests, gravity water filters rely on the force of gravity to filter water.

Water is put into the upper tank, the weight of the water allows it to flow over and through several filter elements placed in the upper tank. The microporous ceramic cartridges have activated charcoal inside them which play a major role in filtering your drinking water.

The purified water is gathered in another tank under the filtration system, where it is available for consumption.

Pros

  • Simple and efficient to use
  • Turn any unreliable water source into drinking water
  • No plumbed water supply needed
  • Long lasting filters

Cons

  • Replacement cost for some of the filter components can be expensive (take care when handling)
  • Relatively slow water output

Verdict

Gravity water filters are among the commonly used water purification techniques today. They are a simple, but efficient way to provide safe water to your family.

These units are intended for use in situations where a supply of safe drinking water is unavailable. They are ideal for outdoor travelers, hikers, missionaries, etc. You can use water from lakes, streams, rivers, etc. to keep you hydrated and to prepare food.

Due to their efficiency in eliminating water-borne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid, gravity water filters are specified for field operations by many aid and emergency relief organizations.

Whether you intend to use these gravity filters as a countertop in your kitchen, or use them while travelling to secluded areas, they will provide you with clean and safe water.

If you’re ever faced with a situation where your water supply is turned off, with a gravity water filter to hand you will not be short of clean drinking water, making this system a great prepper tool too.
